Hey there p&p readers, how are you all on this mizzly Thursday? Sorry about the silence yesterday, it was one of those days where events conspire against you and other things take priority. Back today though, I shan’t abandon you again!
So, on to today’s post…
With the ever increasing appearance of the word ‘vintage’ to describe not only wedding styling, products and services, but also more generally, are these terms getting confused? Regular guest blogger Georgie from The Big Beautiful Bunting Company sheds some light…

So what is the definition of a vintage style wedding? Is my digital radio really retro? Are my scuffed up Louboutin’s really shabby chic? The lines are now officially blurred thanks to current fashion trends and well-meaning ebay sellers but after many chats over my chipped, melamine kitchen worktop with friends, I think I have it all figured out:
{ Antique }
Used to mean anything expensive, full of woodworm and over a hundred years old.
Now means anything expensive, full of woodworm and over 120 years old
{ Vintage }
Used to relate to wine and things that are ‘the best of their era’.
Now means shabby chic.
{ Retro }
Used to mean stuff from the 1950’s to 1970’s.
Now means stuff made to look like stuff made in the 1950’s to 1970’s.
{ Shabby chic }
Used to mean heavily painted furniture that’s been worn over the years.
Now means vintage.
{ Modern }
Used to mean things made in the 1980’s.
Now only used on Homes under the hammer to describe wet rooms.
{ Contemporary }
Used to mean modern.
Now means any of the above styled together in a clever and compelling way.
The truth is that all these terms mean something different to all of us and when we set about organising a wedding, it can mean the difference between spending a little or a lot. For me retro means uncool but sentimental like the leopard skin jumpsuit still hanging in my wardrobe that I shall never wear again. For others it means a brand new Smeg fridge in light blue. For me shabby chic is a threadbare chesterfield sofa but to a mate it conjures up images of willow hearts and gingham ribbon. One thing that is for sure is that everything matures with age and that’s what a good marriage will do no matter what you’re sitting on in 50 years time.

Out of interest, I searched google images for wedding photos described as each of the above. Which do you think is which?
